Daewoo Tacuma Review (2000 to 2005)

Daewoo Tacuma Review on Compucars

Quick Summary

As long as you know that your used Daewoo Tacuma is never going to set neighbourhood curtains twitching in envy, it will make a dependable buy. Other rivals may have more flair, cleverer tricks up their sleeves and more seductive styling, but the Tacuma's going to leave a smaller dent in your disposable income reserves. That'll be more than enough to swing the balance for many cash-strapped families.

WELCOME TO SCENIC SOUTH KOREA

There's nothing wrong with manufacturing a 'me-too' twist on the mini-MPV as long as it brings something new to the party. The Vauxhall Zafira had seven seats, the Honda Stream boasted hot hatch style handling and the Fiat Multipla went for three abreast seating and looks that could curdle milk. Daewoo relied on the tried and tested method of offering good value for money.Mini-MPV drivers appreciate saving money. It's no coincidence that UK buyers took the Citroen Xsara Picasso to their hearts just at the time that thousands of pounds vanished from its sticker price. Deduct a similar amount from a used Tacuma's asking price and they'd be paying you. A slight exaggeration maybe, but if you're after an inexpensive pre-owned mini-MPV, a Tacuma is a great place to start the hunt.

History of the Tacuma

Used Daewoo Tacuma Reviews on Compucars

Arriving in the UK in September 2000, the Daewoo Tacuma rapidly established itself as one of the marque's better offerings and hit the showrooms at a particularly good time for mini-MPV sales. It was initially available in two distinct guises, 1.8 SE or 2.0-litre CDX, the larger-engined car being offered with an automatic option. The paltry £1,000 new price differential between the two models made the 2.0-litre CDX manual the volume seller – that is until summer 2001 when Daewoo recognised that perhaps the 1.8-litre car was a touch pricey and responded with the Xtra Special Edition which not only added additional equipment but also shaved £1,500 off the new price. The Tacuma was revised in early 2004 with a more elegant front grille marking out the newer car. This car continued with Chevrolet badges after Daewoo was taken over but the last new Daewoo model was sold by early 2005.

Daewoo Tacuma Road Test

Since driving enthusiasts don't tend to buy mini-MPVs, the fact that this car hardly leads its class in terms of handling response will come as little disappointment to most potential customers. All you really need to know is that it responds – and performs – quite competently around twistier roads. The 1.8 and 2.0-litre petrol units are lifted straight from the company's Nubira and Leganza models, albeit with minor changes to improve low-end pulling power that don't seem to have had much effect. In the 2.0-litre version, rest to sixty occupies 10.8s on the way to a maximum of 112mph but more significantly, both can achieve up to 31mpg in mixed driving. A four-speed automatic transmission is optional on the 2.0-litre model.

Buying a Daewoo Tacuma

As with all cars that get used to ferry children back and forth, check for rips, stains and other damage to upholstery and minor trim parts. Also bear in mind that many Tacumas are used in urban areas, so check for parking knocks. Remember to check whether you're being taken for a ride by an Xtra owner expecting SE residuals. Other than that, expect the usual Daewoo reliability. Despite this, check for its service history but otherwise buy with confidence.A major plus point, though, is the warranty that buying through an official sales channel brings. Daewoo buyers, new and used, enjoy things like courtesy cars and free MoT tests; for many people that's important.

Daewoo Tacuma Typical Pricing

Putting a 2000 W-plated Tacuma on your drive will set you back around £3,000 if you're hankering after a 1.8 SE or just nudging over £3,100 for a 2.0-litre CDX. Factor in another £300 for an automatic CDX and you'll appreciate that these cars represent something of a bargain. Two points to watch out for. Firstly newer models will still be on a fairly steep part of the depreciation curve and secondly, try to make sure that when you're looking at a 1.8-litre car that you don't get people valuing the Xtra edition as a full-price 1.8SE. It may sound churlish given that the Xtra came with, well, extra trim, but you'll need to arm yourself with all the information to beat the price down.Insurance is Group 8 for 1.8-litre Tacumas and Group 10 for those with the 2.0-litre powerplant.

Daewoo Tacuma Parts

(Estimated prices, based on a 2000 2.0 CDX) Daewoo parts prices have become more affordable in the period since GM took over. Therefore, a clutch assembly will be around £70 and an air filter should be close to £10.Brake pads are around £23 a front set with a cam belt relieving you of nearly £30. Set aside £67 for an exhaust system centre section, whilst a replacement battery will see £50 disappearing from the current account. (These parts prices are estimates on approved parts from the franchises concerned, provided by franchised dealerships, and should be treated as guidance prices only).
