Peugeot 307 Review (2001 to 2007)

Peugeot 307 Review on Compucars

Quick Summary

Apart from a slight nagging doubt that it could let its hair down a little, the Peugeot 307 barely puts a foot wrong. As a used buy it's pretty safe although some may be swayed by sportier rivals. A sound used proposition.
Overall: 3 out of 5

Models Covered: 2001-to date: (3 & 5dr hatchback, 5dr estate; 1.4, 1.6, 2.0 petrol, 1.4, 2.0 HDi turbo diesel [Style, Rapier, LX, GLX, XSi, SW, D Turbo])

A TALL ORDER?

Although a few eyebrows were initially raised when the Peugeot 307 was introduced, it hasn't taken the British public long to get with the program. It may not boast the driver appeal of its forebear, the 306, but the Peugeot 307 range is a hugely improved all-round product. As a used proposition it takes some beating. Why opt for yester-tech when a nearly-new 307 is still so hard to better?

History of the 307

Used Peugeot 307 Reviews on Compucars

Given that hindsight is 20/20 it's now possible to put the 307 into perspective. When the 306 replaced the 309 way back in 1993, we thought this was Peugeot taking a step into the big league as far as quality and mass appeal were concerned. The gap between 307 and 306 is far bigger than that between 306 and 309. Although the 307 waltzed away with the 2001 European Car of the Year award, many Peugeot die-hards were unconvinced by its frumpily upright stance and lack of a fire-breathing GTi version.Since the launch all but the most opinionated would admit that the one-box style shape of the 307 is the shape of the future, with rivals like the Fiat Stilo and the Honda Civic also adopting broadly similar profiles. Sales were steady but nothing to threaten the Ford Focus although they did help to contribute to a bumper profits year in 2001 for Peugeot. The 307 range received its first real change in summer 2002 when the 70bhp 1.4-litre HDi turbodiesel unit was announced as well as the 307 SW/estate version. The diesel powerplants were re-jigged in spring 2004 with the arrival of a 110bhp 1.6-litre 16-valve HDi and a 136bhp 2.0-litre 16-valve HDi. The 2.0-litre 8-valve HDi with 90bhp continued as a mid-range option but this was subsequently replaced by a 1.6-litre 90bhp unit. The 307 was facelifted in time for summer 2005. The gaping air-intake in the front bumper, huge headlamps and shortened bonnet with pronounced side ridges all mark these cars out. In addition, there were trim enhancements, a 2bhp power boost for the 138bhp petrol engine and a 180bhp petrol engine borrowed from the 206 GTi 180 to power the warm hatch FELINE derivative. The 308 arrived in September 2007 spelling the end for the 307.

Peugeot 307 Road Test

A range of six engines offer something for most tastes, with only a fire-breathing GTi version noticeable by its absence. Practical five-door and achingly pretty three-door variants are available, initially with a choice of four engines. A 75bhp 1.4-litre petrol unit kicks off the range, followed by a 110bhp 1.6 and a 138bhp 2.0-litre flagship. Diesel devotees are dealt a 2.0-litre HDi turbo diesel variant familiar to Peugeot 306 drivers the world over. Genuine innovation hit these shores slightly later in the form of a 70bhp 1.4 and 110bhp 2.0-litre turbodiesel engines. Performance is par for the course, with the 90bhp 2.0-litre HDi diesel hitting sixty in 12.8 seconds and the hottest 2.0-litre XSi managing the sprint in 9.2 seconds. Average fuel consumption figures are 54.3 and 35.8mpg respectively. The 307 feels refined and supple on the road, but never shows the sort of manic side the 306 possesses. The ride is comfortable with body roll well suppressed although the potential for greatness can be felt in the chassis.

Buying a Peugeot 307

No significant faults have yet to be reported but a few niggling problems were experienced on early cars. These included rather uneven body panel alignment, interior carpeting that easily comes unstuck and electrics which have been known to briefly die before spontaneously resurrecting themselves. It must be stressed that these issues afflicted only the very first batch of cars and Peugeot is confident that these teething troubles were soon ironed out. Otherwise the 307 should be an extremely safe bet.

Peugeot 307 Typical Pricing

Used Peugeot 307 Reviews on Compucars

You're not likely to find a used 307 for much less than £5,000. This is the rough starting point for a 1.6 3-door with Style trim on a 2001 Y-plate. A 1.4-litre car in LX trim will be around the £3,800 mark – again on a Y registration. At the other end of the line-up a 307 1.6 GLX with a 03-plate will cost around £6,000, while a 2.0-litre GLX of the same age will be £6,400. If you prefer a diesel, 1.4HDi models, on 'Y' plates, with basic Style trim are changing hands for £3,700 and the 90bhp 2.0HDi opens at around £4,450. A 307 with the more powerful 110bhp version of the 2.0HDi powerplant will set you back around £7,600 if you go for Dturbo trim on a 04-plate.
