Success can be a double edged sword. SEAT weren't expecting their Cupra versions of the Leon to sell quite as well as they did and while they were overjoyed at the contribution the Cupras made to their bottom line, it soon became apparent that few people were buying any other sort of Leon. With over 60 per cent of UK Leon sales accounted for by the sports models, there's no shortage of choice for used buyers looking to get a deal on a car that was very good value from new.

History of the Leon

The Leon was launched in March 2000 and the first Cupra was something rather special. Powered by a breathed-upon version of the trusty Volkswagen Group turbo 1.8, it was good for 180bhp and came very generously equipped, albeit with a £17,815 price tag. Based on a platform which also spawned the Volkswagen Golf and Bora, as well as Audi's A3 and Skoda's Octavia, the Leon used tried and tested underpinnings. Saddled with this price tag, the Leon 20VT Cupra, as it was known, was rather a slow seller, so in October 2001 SEAT took a rather radical step. The Cupra model was 'decontented', and was now based on the Sport specification. Buyers did without refinements such as a leather interior, rain sensing wipers, auto-dimming rear view mirror and ESP stability control program. Although leather could be specified as an option on the new version, ESP couldn't, making the earliest 20VT Cupras quite a find. The best bit was that SEAT dropped the price to £14,995. Suddenly Leon Cupras were flying out of showrooms and buyers of the early cars watched their residuals crumble.In mid 2002, Leon buyers got an even spicier option with the introduction of the 210bhp Cupra R version, later updated to 225bhp specification in Autumn 2003. A 150bhp TDI Cupra was introduced in late 2003 , the diesel model accounting for a big slice of Cupra sales before the range was phased out in 2005, replaced by an all new Leon in September of that year. With a gap in production before the second generation Leon Cupras arrived, SEAT missed a trick.

Seat Leon Road Test

On the road, the driving experience isn't much different to that of a Golf (or an Octavia or Audi A3 come to that). Surprise, surprise. Unless you're in the 20VT, that means a predictable, easy, forgiving but not particularly inspiring recipe. The turbocharged Cupra model is the Leon's ace in the hole. Reaching 60mph in a mere 7.7seconds on the way to 142mph, the Leon offers budget power, although those who expect it to handle like a Peugeot 205GTi may be a trifle disappointed. That's not to say that the Leon is a dynamic duffer – far from it – it's just a lot more mature and relaxed than the eyeball-searing paint and ultra-low profile tyres would have you believe. If you're after something that will corner like a demon, your money would be better invested in a Renaultsport Clio 172. If, on the other hand, you want something that goes a lot faster than it feels, the Leon may well be more suitable. Despite its undoubted pace, the Leon suffers from that perennial VW Group complaint, fading brakes. This only manifests itself when the brakes are used very hard, such as on a demanding hill route or during track work, and that sinking middle pedal, noticeable drop in retardation and significant increase in the smoke often spell the end of play until some cooling has taken place.

Buying a Seat Leon

If you're in the market for a Cupra, check that it hasn't been mechanically abused or defaced by Max Power accessories, otherwise there really isn't much to say about the Leon. Using mechanically tried and tested components from the VW Group, it goes without saying that the Leon will be reliable. Factor in a rock-solid perception of build quality and hardwearing interior trims and you've got a recipe for a car that will run and run. Make sure you don't get a 210bhp Cupra-R passed off as the more powerful 225bhp car. The red badges at the back are a giveaway but you may have to check the VIN number to be extra sure. Early cars had issues with ignition coil packs but by now this should have been sorted.

Seat Leon Typical Pricing

The sum of £4,875 buys quite a lot of car in thee shape of an early 1.8 20VT Cupra. The well equipped W and early X plate models aren't that common but are worth tracking down. Don't put up with the vendor trying to extract big money for this well-equipped car. A later 02 plated example showing around 42,000 miles on the clock will retail at around £7,100. Opt instead for the Cupra R and you'll need around £8,125 for an average mileage example on a 2002 02 plate, with a nicely looked after 225bhp model on the 04 plate still worth around £12,325. The 150bhp diesel model is quite sought after and these kick off at £10,850 rising to around £12,600 for the last of the 54 platers. Insurance opens at Group 13 for the diesel, with the 225bhp Cupra R saddled with a Group 17 premium.

(approx based on a Leon 20VT Cupra ) Leon consumables aren't anything to worry about for the nearly-new buyer. An air filter is around £20, spark plugs £4 each and an oil filter is £8. A fuel filter amounts to around £18.
