It may be closing in on its fiftieth birthday, but the Caterham Seven continues to pick up honours – at home and abroad.
With a four-month waiting list ahead of the summer, the Surrey based sports carmaker enters 2004 in buoyant mood clutching two more accolades.
According to Autocar magazine the flagship Superlight R500, first seen back in 1999, is still one of the Top Ten "must have" cars you can buy.
Autocar eulogised: "Porsche GT-whatever, Ferrari-take-your-pick – it really doesn’t matter because the R500 has more thrust, more braking power and so much more lateral grip, that they must all defer to the little English rollerskate."
Meanwhile, across the English Channel, Sport Auto in France went one better, and voted the same model its Car of the Year 2003.
The minimalist two-seater outshone the likes of the Aston Martin DB7 GT, Ferrari Enzo and Porsche 911 GT3 to the prestigious crown where the judges enthused: "Forget the Ferraris, Porsches, V12s and V8s, the little English model, with four cylinders and 1800cc, gives you the most authentic and sensational driving experience around."
Notwithstanding the outstanding performance, the Seven has also been described in recent weeks as ‘one of the coolest cars you could ever hope to drive’ by leading men’s lifestyle title, GQ.
Simon Nearn, managing director of Caterham Cars commented: "With proven reliability, low running costs and painless depreciation, there is a Seven for every budget."
"It is still the best value car in the world for performance and price. Road or track it will give an adrenaline inducing blast every outing and should you ever bear to part with your Seven, the manufacturer will buy back from you."
The entry-level Caterham Seven range starts at £12,950 for the Classic rising to £36,450 for the 230bhp, barnstorming Superlight R500.
