Now on sale is Citroën’s new Euro IV compliant Berlingo range, offered with a choice of even more advanced, fuel efficient engines. The new 1.6HDi diesels now fitted to the Berlingo range provide the operational benefits of improved economy, greater power and up to 40 per cent more torque compared with the powerplants they replace, as well as lower engine operating speeds and the environmental benefits of Euro IV emission standards.
Replacing the Euro III 1.9D and 2.0HDi diesels are 75hp and 90hp versions of Citroën’s Euro IV 1.6HDi engine. These diesel units are complemented by a 75hp Euro IV 1.4i petrol engine, already available in the Berlingo for conversion to run on both LPG and petrol.
The new 1560cc 1.6HDi Euro IV diesel engine is already widely used in Citroën cars. In these applications it has gained a reputation for smooth, fuel efficient performance and excellent driveability in cars such as the C3 supermini and Xsara Picasso mpv.
In 55kW (75hp) format, the 1.6HDi develops its maximum power at 4,000rpm, representing a 5.6 per cent increase in power compared with the 71hp 1.9D unit. More significant in real world terms is the 1.6HDi 75hp’s improved fuel economy and 40 per cent increase in peak torque to 175Nm (129lb.ft) at 1750rpm. This greatly increased torque output is developed at 750rpm less than the 1.9D, resulting in better in-gear performance and easier driving characteristics.
The new 67kW (90hp) 1.6HDi engine also offers improved fuel economy as well as more torque. Peak torque rises from 205Nm to 215Nm (158.6lb.ft) at 1750rpm, which is developed 150rpm lower down the rev range than on the 90hp 2.0HDi engine it replaces.
Robert Handyside, Citroën UK’s head of commercial vehicles, comments, “The new Berlingo range will strengthen Citroën’s position in the light van sector, with these Euro IV compliant engines offering operators the key benefits of improved fuel efficiency, driveability and performance, coupled with lower emissions.”
