A new package of side and roof airbags has just become available as an option on the Fiat Punto. This new safety feature replaces the current option of side airbags, and further increases Punto’s comprehensive safety specification. Roof airbags are currently not available for Punto’s volume competitors.
As with the side airbags, there are two roof airbags, one on each side of the vehicle located directly above the side windows in the roof lining, and designed for the front seat passengers only. The roof airbag is an Inflatable Tubular System (ITS) composed of a nylon bag, approximately 12 litres in volume.
In the event of a sufficiently severe collision, the airbags are deployed automatically at the same time as the side airbags. They protect the heads of the driver and front passenger from impact with the side windows and roof of the vehicle. Two seat-mounted side airbags simultaneously protect the driver and front passenger from door intrusions.
This class-leading new safety feature is available as an option across the Punto range, (except for Punto Mia), and is being fitted as standard equipment on Punto HGT and HGT Abarth models.
All Punto versions (except Mia) are already fitted with driver and passenger airbags as standard equipment.
Punto’s robust construction and comprehensive safety engineering were publicly acclaimed 18 months ago when Fiat Auto won the What Car? 2000 Safety Award.
Punto scored a class-leading four-star rating in Euro-NCAP crash tests, whose officials were impressed by Fiat’s unrelenting efforts to refine safety performance.
All possible types of accident have been considered by Fiat engineers to ensure a particularly high level of passenger safety for the Punto, and an in-depth examination of all bodyshell parameters has led to a set of technical solutions that make it one of the safest cars on the road. Its frame also includes very strong high-tech steel that represented a new initiative for cars in this segment.
