MAKING NEW DRIVERS BETTER DRIVERS

BRENTWOOD, 13 August, 2003 -- Ford Motor Company Ltd today announced a new advanced driver course offer to help new drivers improve their driving skills.

The courses, in association with The AA Driving School (AADS), are for new drivers who take advantage of free insurance offers on selected new Ford cars.

The advanced driver course is designed to make new drivers, better drivers. It covers six key areas of driving, not dealt with in detail when learning to drive:

Town and city driving
All weather driving
Out of town driving
Driving at night
Dual carriageway and A road driving
Motorway driving
The aim of the new programme is to promote safer driving and provide lasting benefits for customers. First-time Ford customers who recently passed their driving test or who do not currently possess any no-claims discount will be invited to attend a course local to them. For these customer groups, costs are met by Ford Motor Company as a condition of their one year's free insurance policy. By completing the course they not only become road-savvy but also could enjoy lower insurance premiums in the future.

Statistics show that one in five newly qualified drivers will have an accident within their first year on the road. While new drivers make up just 10 per cent of licence holders they are involved in 29 per cent of all road accidents.

"It is well recognized that the driving test does not give new drivers experience of driving on motorways, at night or many other situations so Ford Motor Company wanted to help new Ford drivers become better drivers," explained Peter Fleet, marketing director, Ford of Britain. " Our hope is that they will be safer drivers and they should also be able to look forward to lower insurance costs in future years."
