Hundreds of Harley-Davidson engineers and assembly workers have just said farewell to a modern ‘classic’ as the last rigid-mounted Sportster rolled off the production line at the Motor Company’s Kansas City plant.
This final edition officially ended 46 years of rigid-mounted Sportster production. Harley-Davidson’s Archives in Milwaukee will provide a permanent home for this unique machine and it will be stored alongside other Sportster classics like the XR750 and Willie G. Davidson’s XLCR Café Racer.
But no sooner has one era closed at Kansas City than a brand new Sportster chapter has roared into life, as a completely redesigned Harley-Davidson Sportster family was literally waiting in the wings.
The four-strong model line-up features smoother, rubber-mounted engines offering greater comfort and performance; increased fuel capacity; XL Evolution 883 and XL Evolution 1200 V-Twin engines delivering increased horsepower and more torque; a new braking system; and an extensive package of styling and rider ergonomic improvements. Steve Earnshaw, marketing manager for Harley-Davidson Europe comments:
"The Sportsters are taking an exciting new direction but one vital element remains completely unchanged; the XL 883 and XL883 Custom are the most competitively priced 900cc motorcycles in the UK with on the road prices starting at just £5,195."
