THE SANTA FE DIESEL TAKES ECONOMY OFF THE BEATEN TRACK

Tuesday 10 July 2001

THE SANTA FE DIESEL TAKES ECONOMY OFF THE BEATEN TRACK Hot on the heels of the frugal Trajet turbo-diesel, Hyundai announces the Santa Fe sports utility-vehicle which will be available with a 2.0 common-rail turbo-diesel engine from 16 July.

The Santa Fe has proved to be a huge hit for Hyundai, selling more than double the expected numbers in the first two months since launch in February. Demand is set to be even greater when the 2.0 TD becomes available this month.

The Santa Fe 2.0 TD returns an impressive 43.5 mpg on the extra urban run, 29.7 mpg on the urban scale and 37.2 combined. The 1991cc motor develops 115 bhp at 4000 rpm and develops 260 Nm/192 lbs ft of torque @ 2000 rpm. Its top speed is 103 mph, while it does the 0-62 mph dash in 14.9 seconds. The SOHC engine, which features a cast-iron block with an aluminium alloy cylinder head, uses a Bosch developed high-pressure common-rail injection system.

The two-litre engine is developed in house by Hyundai Motor Company in Korea, and is part of a family of clean and advanced common-rail diesels now available in the UK.

The Trajet 2.0 TD GSi is already on sale, while the new 1.5 turbo-diesel engine will be seen in the new Matrix mini-MPV towards the end of the year.

The Santa Fe 2.0 TD will be one of the most price-competitive diesel SUVs on the market – at £16,999 on the road, including three years unlimited mileage warranty, six years anti-perforation warranty and three years RAC Assistance.

The 2.0 TD carries the same specification as the 2.4 petrol engined version, which means the following is standard: anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution, engine immobiliser, power steering, seat belt pre-tensioners, four-wheel drive with double differential unit, air conditioning, CD/radio with RDS, electric door mirrors, front and rear windows plus sunroof, alloy wheels, front fog lamps and metallic paint.
