The new Hyundai Sonata more of a revolution than evolution.

Tuesday 27 September 2005

The new Hyundai Sonata more of a revolution than evolution. Hyundai’s replacement for its outgoing Sonata is more a case of revolution than evolution.

All-new Sonata, the fifth generation of the model, is a complete redesign from the ground up. The result is a sleek modern and confident upper medium (D Segment) saloon, brimming with the latest technologies and set to compete with the best in its class.

Longer, wider, taller and roomier than the previous model, all new Sonata is also quicker, stronger and safer than the car that it has replaced. New Sonata also has a significant size and space advantage over its predecessor and, equally importantly, many of its key competitors.

For example, despite Volkswagen’s added dimensions to its latest Passat, Hyundai’s new Sonata is a further 35 mm longer, 12 mm wider and 3 mm taller and has a 20 mm longer wheelbase.

What is more, when it comes to road holding and handling, just like its Germanic counterpart, new Sonata meets the class standard with its independent multi-link rear suspension.

To enable the driver to enjoy Sonata’s supple ride and compliant handling to the full, Hyundai has fitted as standard Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), which, as its initials could imply, provides the car with extra sensory perception or a sixth sense to assist the driver.

By reacting to inputs from computer sensors, ESP regulates brake and engine outputs to maximise control and help maintain the vehicle’s stability and direction under all conditions.

Sonata also has TCS (Traction Control System) ABS brakes with EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution) as standard, optimising the amount of braking at each wheel according to the way the car is loaded.

ESP integrates TCS, ABS and EBD which work together to enhance Sonata’s performance and help to ensure a safer and more satisfying experience for driver and passengers alike.

All-new ‘Theta’ engine

An all-new car with such performance capability certainly deserves an entirely new engine, which in the Sonata’s case has been installed in the form of Hyundai’s newly developed 2,359 cc DHOC 160 bhp (161 PS) ‘Theta’ 2.4 litre four cylinder all aluminium unit.

Whether mated to the five-speed manual or four speed H-Matic automatic transmission with a manual sequential option, the ‘Theta’ unit, with CVVT (Continuously Variable Valve Timing) and tuned air intake system, provides maximum power and economy with minimal fuel consumption and emissions.

Maximum power is 160 bhp (161 PS) at 5,800 rpm with 162 lbs/ft (219 Nm) torque at 4,250 rpm, which is enough to power the Sonata to a top speed of 132 mph, while enabling it to cover up to 33.2 mpg (manual model) on the Combined Cycle.
Refined, Confident and Practical

Sonata’s interior reflects its refined and confident external styling. Full leather trim, including seats, door panels, hand brake and gear lever, comes as standard for a sumptuous setting that cossets its occupants in a comfortingly robust environment.

The cavernous interior can swallow up five six-feet-tall passengers, with ample leg, shoulder and head room both front and rear.

Practical little touches, meanwhile, such as the shopping bag or takeaway hook in the passenger footwell and the in-car remote boot and petrol cap release buttons, lend a further sense refinement and confidence.

For optimum comfort in the cockpit, the driver’s seat has a pump action height adjust and in the automatic model the front centre armrest slides forward or back. Twin cup holders sit neatly beneath a flip over cover in the centre console.

In the rear, three 3-point rear seatbelts make the Sonata a true five seater. Three universal ISOFIX child seat fixing points and curtain airbags make it an ideal family choice too. With just two rear passengers on board, for added comfort a rear centre armrest can be fol
