IVECO STEALS THE UPPER HAND ON CRIME

Commercial vehicle crime data released by Truckpol has demonstrated that the fitment of immobilisers as standard on Iveco trucks during 2001 has led to a massive reduction in the number of Iveco vehicles stolen.

In 2004, a total of 734 Iveco commercial vehicles with engines over five litres displacement were reported stolen to Truckpol, an intelligence unit within the Metropolitan Police dedicated to collating and analysing road freight crime across the UK.

These figures included 166 vehicles registered between 1993 and 1995, 230 between 1996 and 1998, 148 between 1999 and 2001, and just nine between 2002 and 2004.

"The introduction of immobilisers across the Iveco truck family has played a significant role in combating truck thefts," explains Chris Thorneycroft-Smith, Iveco's UK Market Director.

"The figures really do speak for themselves, and we are confident that the strong security credentials of our product ranges will continue to help reduce truck theft rates across the country," he adds.

Data released by Truckpol states that a total of 2,236 LGV's were reported stolen in 2004, equating to an average of approximately 186 per month or six each day.

Of those vehicles reported stolen, 1,133 (51 per cent) are shown as being recovered within the first 24 hours. Intelligence suggests that vehicles that are not recovered are generally dismantled for their component parts, which are then sold in the UK or exported abroad.
