FIRST FOR KIA
World Premiere of five-door family hatchback

First Kia saloon and hatchback to be offered with diesel power

Choice of two diesel and two petrol engines with two equipment levels

Introduction of new 1.5-litre 4 cylinder common-rail diesel engine

Kia’s all-new five-door Cerato makes its world premiere at the Geneva International Motor Show today (Tuesday 2 March). For the first time in this segment, Kia will be offering customers a choice of two petrol and two diesel engines in the Cerato. The diesel engines feature common-rail technology for the optimum balance between performance, economy and clean emissions.

Styled to attract modern, image conscious C-segment customers, the five-door Cerato is a car that perfectly matches Kia’s ‘young, sporty and friendly’ brand aspirations with the aim to attract more than 45,000 European customers annually within two years of its launch.

Strong bodyshell for safety and refinement

Compared to the saloon, the five-door hatchback is 140 mm shorter, with the rear overhang cut from 965 mm to 825 mm. The roof height is common to both models, but the hatchback’s roof is longer and it provides more headroom (up by 15 mm) for rear seat passengers. Despite the reduced overall length, the unique design of its C-pillars, rear floorpan and tailgate ensures that the five-door has a large boot capacity.

Space for all

The generous 2,610 mm wheelbase makes Cerato a spacious car with 1,087 mm of legroom at the front and 898 mm at the rear. Headroom is 1,017 mm in the front and 985 mm in the rear. Shoulder room is 1,400 mm for front seat occupants and 1,370 mm across the rear seat.

The interior design is simple, modern and clean-cut, and executed in high-quality materials. The dash is divided horizontally, with the upper surfaces in a dark colour which continues around the doors.

The rear seat cushion and backrest are split 60/40 while boot capacity is a massive 538 litres with the seats upright, expanding to 1,494 litres with the seats fully folded.

Diesel debut

The first Kia passenger car to be available with a diesel engine, the new Cerato range of five-door hatchback and four-door saloon models offers customers a choice of two diesel engines.

Performance of the all-new 4 cylinder 1.5 CRDi diesel engine is highly competitive and promises to be one of the best in its class. The 16-valve unit delivers 102 ps of power and 215.7 Nm of torque at just 2,000 rpm. The 2.0 CRDi diesel generates a maximum power of 112 ps and torque of 245.2 Nm at 2,000 rpm. Both diesel engines come with a five-speed manual transmission.

For customers who prefer a petrol engine two units are offered with a choice of manual or automatic transmission. The 1.6 DOHC unit produces 105 ps at 5,800 rpm and 143.2 Nm of torque at 4,500 rpm. Its CO2 figures are 165 g/km (manual) and 187 g/km (automatic).

The 2.0 DOHC powerplant brings continuously variable valve timing (CVVT) to the marketplace in a Kia for the first time. CVVT automatically adjusts valve timing to boost performance, throttle response, fuel economy and reduce emissions, at low and medium engine speeds. This engine generates 143 ps at 6,000 rpm and maximum torque of 186.0 Nm at 4,500 rpm. CO2 figures are 180 g/km (manual) and 195 g/km (automatic).

A balanced solution for good ride and handling

The five-door Kia Cerato is fitted with a fully independent suspension system designed to deliver responsive handling and a supple, comfortable ride. On every Cerato, nitrogen gas-filled Sachs shock absorbers are standard fit for both the front and rear suspension, and the power-assisted rack and pinion system requires 2.8 turns of the steering wheel lock-to-lock. In Europe, Kia Cerato cars come exclusively with Bridgestone tyres. The standard wheels are 15 inch diameter, 6.0 inch wide steel units, with
