LAND ROVER TO BOOST FREELANDER PRODUCTION Friday 20 July 2001
Land Rover, the UK-based manufacturer of 4x4 vehicles, is to increase production of the best-selling Freelander model at its manufacturing plant at Solihull.
The volume uplift will take place at the beginning of September. Production will rise from 1750 vehicles per week to 1950.
The increase is required to meet demand in North America, where Freelander sales commence at the end of this year. It follows from the vehicle's successful introduction in Japan, where Land Rover sales volumes have increased three-fold compared with the same period last year following the launch of the Freelander V6. The Freelander is already the best-selling 4x4 vehicle in both the UK and Europe.
Commenting on the announcement, Land Rover’s chairman and chief executive officer Bob Dover said: "International expansion is the key to Land Rover's expected growth. Introducing the Freelander into the North American market is an important step in our expansion plans. The USA is the world's biggest 4x4 market and we are hoping to increase greatly Land Rover's presence there."
Approximately 150 extra people will be added to the 8,317 already employed at Solihull to meet the new demand for Freelander. The Freelander production increase will take place within the current two-shift pattern.
Overall production rates for the Land Rover Defender, Discovery and Range Rover models remain unchanged.
