Featuring a host of improvements and a reduced price, the Maserati Spyder 2004 models (the GT and Cambiocorsa) continue the successful concept of the high performance two-seater cabriolet with a unique combination of elegant Italian styling, breathtaking performance and on-board luxury. Styled by Italdesign-Giugiaro, the Spyder was the first new Maserati to be developed entirely under the supervision of company owners Ferrari.

The Maserati Spyder brings together all of the most desirable elements of an open top Grand Tourer. The 4.2-litre V8 normally-aspirated engine, which it shares with the Coupé, provides record performance for a production Maserati with a top speed of 176 mph (283 km/h) and a 0-to-60 mph acceleration time of just 4.9 seconds.

The sporting characteristics and driving versatility of the car have been further optimised with the introduction of new management software for the electronic transmission model known as Cambiocorsa (Italian for racing gearbox). In addition, the six-speed manual transmission version, which is badged GT, benefits from an improved gearchange quality.

"It was the 3200 GT that began the rejuvenation of the Maserati brand both worldwide and here in the UK," said Philip Mills, Operations Director of Maranello Concessionaires Limited, distributor of Maserati in the UK, "The new-for-2004 thoroughbred Spyders, with their technological, sporting, performance and comfort improvements, will continue that success story.

"The new range of colours and trims combined with the unique Skyhook suspension, heated seats, Navtrak security system and a competitive price – from £61,995 – all means that the exclusive experience of owning a new Maserati now has even greater allure," concludes Mills.

The Maserati Spyder 2004 is a product of the high technology and manufacturing processes centred in the famous Viale Ciro Menotti plant in Modena, Italy, which has been completely transformed to become the world’s most advanced manufacturing facility for low volume production of vehicles.

Design

The design of the current Maserati Spyder reflects the same ‘understated power’ already established by the earlier 3200 GT. The two cars are broadly similar in appearance, sharing many design cues, but the changes introduced by Italdesign-Giugiaro are clearly evident in certain features of the new model, particularly the more muscular design of the bonnet and the rear end, where new clear-lens light clusters have been harmoniously incorporated into the wings. With its reduced wheelbase, the Spyder is 220 mm shorter than the Coupé.

The Spyder features a fully-automated convertible fabric roof, with an electro-hydraulic operating system, and a design which does not intrude on the boot space when folded down. The heated rear window is made from glass and twin body-coloured roll-hoops are positioned behind the cockpit.

The Maserati identity is conveyed by numerous design details, first and foremost the nose, which sports the historic oval shield as well as the famous trident on the grille. The Spyder 2004 sits on 18 inch diameter, 15-spoke alloy wheels as standard, or an all-new 7-spoke design available as option.

Bodywork

The body is a two-door, two-seater configuration. The engine is mounted longitudinally at the front, with r
