Mazda unveils a radical two-seat sports car concept - the Mazda Ibuki - at the 2003 Tokyo Motor Show next week. The world premiere of the Mazda Ibuki concept will reveal an open-top, lightweight sports car that hints at a possible design and technology direction of a future Mazda roadster.
The name Ibuki comes from a Japanese word meaning "breathing new energy into" and "adding vigour" reflecting Mazda’s 1989 sports car origins in a simple and clean design.
Powered by a MZR 1.6-litre, four-cylinder engine, the Mazda Ibuki concept has a front-midship layout, as found in the Mazda RX-8, that places all major components within the wheelbase. Thanks to this layout yaw inertia moment has been greatly reduced and straight-line handling has been greatly improved, enhancing the pure fun and driveability and emphasising the connection between car and driver that has been central to Mazda’s ongoing success.
