The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van carried off the industry’s top trophy for an unprecedented second year running, at the annual Motor Transport Awards held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London’s Park Lane on Wednesday (30 June).
In a repeat performance of the 2003 awards, the Sprinter beat off challenges from the Iveco Daily, Renault Master and Ford Transit to retain its ‘Fleet Van Of The Year’ title for the second time in a row.
Applauding Mercedes-Benz for the vehicle’s build quality and its dealer support, the judges had no hesitation in awarding the Sprinter the top spot again.
Of the 14 awards up for grabs, this was one of only two to be decided by a panel of independent judges, who drew up their own shortlist before picking the winner – the award cannot be entered or applied for. In this case the panel comprised a dozen of the country’s top fleet van buyers.
Peter Lambert, Sales & Marketing Director for Mercedes-Benz Vans says: "Our entire Van team are delighted to have lifted this award for a record-breaking second time in a row. For a van that was launched in 1995, given new CDI engines in 2000 and a big facelift in 2003, it’s a real accolade to have beaten off newer competition in this fiercely competitive sector of the market.
"Being picked as the winner by this judging panel makes the prize even sweeter - between them, they account for the vast bulk of fleet purchasing in the UK, so it’s a ‘real’ award from the users at the sharp end of the business."
