The Škoda Octavia Estate 4x4 has been selected as Towcar of the Year 2002 in its price category by The Caravan Club. Topping the £13,501 - £16,500 Class, the four-wheel drive Estate beat competitors such as the Citroen C5 1.8 LX and Subaru Impreza 2.0 GX to top honours.
Commenting on its choice, The Caravan Club wrote, "Good scores all round for the good-value Octavia Estate 4x4. You can push hard when you want to overtake; the ride was always comfortable and permanent four-wheel drive means no loss of traction when you take off – even on a steep hill."
The Octavia Estate 4x4 is powered by Škoda ’s powerful 1.8 turbo-charged 150bhp engine, going from 0-62mph in 9.3 seconds and developing 155 lb. ft. of torque across a range of 1,750 to 4,600 rpm. Permanent four-wheel drive provides immediate reaction to road conditions, adjusting the amount of drive sent to front and rear wheels automatically. ABS brakes with electronic brake force distribution (EDS) and anti-spin regulation (ASR) is standard, along with ESP, an electronic stability programme which helps to maintain driving stability when there is a risk of sliding. The result is very confident handling in a 4x4 that feels more like a car than a rugged off-roader.
With a high level of specification, the Škoda Octavia Estate 4x4 looks as good as it drives. Standard equipment includes climate control with air conditioning, electric front and rear windows, stereo system with six CD changer, electric sunroof and remote central locking. The Octavia Estate 4x4 has plenty of room for five passengers and lots of carrying capacity (1,412 litres with the rear seats folded) for travelling to and from work or towing a caravan to a holiday destination.
Škoda now offers the same handling and specification in a hatchback version, the Octavia 4x4 Hatch. Powered by the same 1.8 turbo-charged, 150 bhp engine as the 4x4 Estate, the 4x4 Hatch provides permanent four-wheel drive for drivers who prefer hatchback styling. It has bags of carrying capacity, 428 litres with the rear seats up, growing to 1,228 litres with the rear seats folded. Available now at Škoda retailers, the Octavia 4x4 Hatch is priced at £15,500, making it another excellent value from Škoda.
