INTRODUCTION
The Toyota Avensis Verso, the stylish and dynamic alternative to boxy compact MPVs, has been restyled and given an improved specification for the New Year. Available from 2 February, it offers both good looks and practicality for owners looking for a more versatile alternative to conventional family saloons and hatchbacks.
Launched in August 2001, the Avensis Verso seats up to seven in three rows of seats. The rear two rows are multi-adjustable for flexible arrangements of seating and load space. They can also be removed completely, expanding the load capacity to more than 2,400 litres, loading to the roof.
STYLING REFINEMENTS
From the outside, the revised Avensis Verso can be distinguished by its new front and rear bumper sections, bolder front-end design with new headlamps and grille, and new clear lens lamp clusters at the rear.
New-style wheel covers have been introduced for the T3’s 15-inch wheels and there are new-design 16-inch alloy wheels fitted as standard to the T Spirit.
The fresh look extends to five new body colour choices: Astral Black, Argenta (silver) metallic, Regency Red metallic, Acier Blue metallic and Lagoon Blue metallic. Pure White and Island Green metallic are carried over from the previous range. In the cabin, darker "Blencathra" fabric upholstery is now fitted as standard and smart titanium-effect trim detailing and chrome interior door handles have been fitted.
SIX AIRBAGS AS STANDARD
The all-round safety performance of the Avensis Verso has been strengthened with the introduction of front side airbags and Curtain Shield airbags as standard equipment, in addition to the driver and front passenger airbags.
The active safety package now includes optional Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRC). ABS, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA) remain standard on all versions.
2.0-LITRE VVT-i PETROL AND D-4D DIESEL POWER
The Avensis Verso is powered by a choice of 2.0-litre VVT-i petrol and 2.0-litre D-4D common rail diesel engines, as previously. The only change to the drivetrain has been to adjust the petrol unit so that it now complies with the Euro IV emissions standards, well in advance of their enforcement date in 2005. These changes have marginally improved fuel consumption on the urban and combined cycles to 25mpg (automatic 23.9) and 33.2mpg (automatic 31.7) respectively. Extra urban performance is unchanged at 41.5mpg (automatic 38.7).
ADVANCED SATELLITE NAVIGATION AND PARK ASSIST
Two satellite navigation systems are now available for the Avensis Verso.
A DVD-based turn-by-turn system is standard on the T Spirit and an option on the T3 and is now equipped with an Electronic Traffic Avoidance (ETA) function. The information capacity of the DVD allows journeys across different European countries to be planned and followed without having to change discs en route.
ETA helps the driver plan a route with the benefit of a live traffic information feed. The system receives coded information 24 hours a day from a wide range of traffic information sources, even when the unit is switched off. This provides the driver with advance warning of incidents and congestion. If a route has been programmed into the system, ETA has an ‘avoid traffic’ option that will automatically provide a new route avoiding the congestion.
An advanced navigation system with full colour mapping facility is available as an option on T Spirit models. It is programmed by means of a touch-screen display on the dashboard that is both easy and safe to use.
This system also incorporates a Rear View Monitor and Park Assist, which make reverse parking manoeuvres both simpler and safer. Clear colour images from a miniature camera mounted discreetly on the tailgate are transmitted to the dashboard display screen when reverse gear is s
